This practical and informative workshop is designed for counselling trainees preparing to work in UK schools. Whether you’re about to begin a placement or are early in your experience, this session offers key insights to help you navigate the unique environment of a school setting with confidence and professionalism.
We’ll explore the structure and culture of UK schools, including key roles such as the Headteacher, Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), and the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO). Understanding how these roles intersect with your own as a counsellor is vital for effective collaboration and ethical practice.
The workshop will cover safeguarding protocols, confidentiality boundaries specific to working with minors, and how to build trust with both students and staff.
Special attention will be given to the SENCO’s role and how to support students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), as well as strategies for integrating your work into the wider pastoral care system.
Through discussion, case examples, and practical tips, this session aims to equip you with the tools and awareness needed to work safely, respectfully, and effectively in a school setting.
